Why Food, Water & Energy Security?

In an ever changing world with exponential development in technology, gadgets, and people it can be easy to forget the main reason man began this journey.  The fundamental needs of humans and many other creatures are food to eat, water to drink and shelter or warmth.  In our pursuit to reduce our effort in obtaining these necessities we have gorged ourselves on every natural resource available at the expense of our fellow inhabitants and the ecosystem that has provided us with the materials and environment that made our life possible.  With all this advancement there are still 3 billion people who live in poverty conditions (on less than $2US per day) ODW, almost half of this number is considered to liveunder conditions of "extreme poverty"(less than $1.25US per day).  There are countless statistics designed to shock us into action but it has cause most to shut these messages out.  A speaker from the World Food Organisation discribed the death of 25,000 children per day from hunger to the crashing of 62 planes (747's) loaded with children everyday.

On the home front of many developed countries a different fate has fallen us.  Generations have lost the true value and respect for food,  water and the knowledge to provide our own shelter and energy.  We eat food that has travelled for 1000's of miles, been stored for many months, sprayed with toxic chemicals and grown for colour - to be fashionable, durability - to survive this travel and endure up to a year in storage and size - to fit neatly onto shelves and spaces designed for display.  Diet related disease and sickness plagues all generations.  Biodiversity of organic produce and animal stocks have been reduced to a few species in order to fit all of these criteria as well as resist drought, pests and disease.  In 100 years of industrial agriculture we have managed to destroy half of the available topsoil on the planet due to erosion from land clearing and poor farming practices.  The oceans are in rapid decline with over fishing, pollution and acidification bringing the possibility of extinction to many species ever closer.  The population is set to reach 9 billion by the middle of this century and in order to provide enough food for that number we need to double the amount of food we produce immediately.  iSustainable is on a quest to find practical, real solutions to the challenges that will impact on the security of our Food, Water and Energy.  Subscribe to our newsletter to stay informed about projects and innovations we are implementing that can help us all make a difference. -  Team iSustainable.

Eco Mushrooms

Growing mushrooms from coffee waste is just one of the Food Security initiatives that iSustainable is implementing, joining a growing trend to grow food in the cities and near where we live.  Millions of tonnes of coffee grinds go into land fill every year and this process will be able to remove it from the waste stream, put it to good use and the beauty of a closed system is that the waste product that is left after the mushrooms are harvested can be used as a high grade compost that can add beneficial microbes and nutrients to improve soil as well as help it hold water.  This super waste product can even be used as a livestock feed for goats, pigs and chickens.  read more...

Why should we worry about Water Security when the world has been plagued with extreme weather events that have seen record flooding and devastation at record levels?

Climate change contributes to the instability of the weather and many factors to do with water and how it cycles through the earths hydrological system effect the amount of water that falls to the ground as precipitation (rain), where, when and how much.  In some cases, a regions rainfall for the entire year may be visited upon them in the space of a few short days.  The consequences of which can cause a devastating blow to agricultural crops and indeed wash them and the precious topsoil the grow in out to sea.  read more...

Global thirst for oil to produce cheap energy and many other products has seen an uneven distribution of wealth and power in nations that supply oil and those that demand it.  This has led to political instability in these countries for decades with the poor and vulnerable people of these areas seeing no positive benefit from their own natural resource.

Developed countries are heavily dependent on oil as its main source of energy.  Since the United States hit peak oil production in the 1971, the last 40 years has seen record prices and an increase in unrest in other countries, particularly in the Middle East where they too reached peak oil over a decade ago.  Are we going to run out of oil?  Have we left it too late to fund valuable research into alternatives to fossil fuels?  read more...
